How many Chevy Chevettes are left in this world? And are they good on gas?

I saw one the other day, it was in great shape.....It was that chevy light blue from the 70's.|||Chevy Chevettes were made from 1976 - 1987.

I personally have owned 7 Chevettes. Chevettes worst problems were these: floor would rust out, and shock towers would rust out. I've learned how to replace both. Timing belts weren't to bad but the secret w/ them was not to over tighten the belts or they would fail very early. Gas mileage w/ automatics was about 25 city 30 hwy, 4 speed cars was about 27 city and 35-40 mpg hwy. It would depend on what final gears you had in the rear end. Basically good cars but you just couldn't run the pee out of them continuously. They were like any other car, they had there bad days too.|||They actually weren't too bad on gas (40+ mpg), and they never had a problem with exploding when hit because the fuel tank was tucked within the unibody rails. (Pintos had the reputation for exploding, which was blown out of proportion by the media). They were not the most reliable cars sometimes, and were butt ugly and had less power than most electric bicycles, but there are still lots of them around. Some weekend off-road rally racers like them because they are cheap, light, rear drive, and can carry a monster motor.|||I remember replacing a lot of timing belts and crankshaft bolts but other than that it was not to bad a car for that era.the power is not to great and comfort is at a minimum.30 mpg,s is about average with automatic ,higher if equipped with stick.|||I don't the first answer. But I owned one when they were new. They suck. They break down a lot. Stuff I've never seen break would break (like the door hinge). The only thing good about the car is that it is so low tech that it can be fixed fairly easily. And you will need to fix it often.

And the engine is weaker than my grandma.

I would rather buy a good used Civic.

Good Luck...|||OMG, I used to run around in one of those in the late 70's early 80's! We had so much fun in that little car. I don't know how they are on fuel though. Doesn't the high price of gas just suck? The oil companies wont finish until they have broken every ones back!|||Anything that old is bad on gas.|||those cars have a nasty reputation of exploding during a accident.
