How can a Chevy cobalt give another car a jump start?

How can a chevy cobalt give another car a jumpstart, if the battery is in the trunk?

I tried to give someone a jump today and was unsuccessful. i hooked my jumper cables under my hood to a positive but couldnt find a negative spot, so i just hooked it to a ground. is that the right way ? serious answers only , thanks|||Actually, the safety mavens prefer you connect to a ground than to the negative terminal of the battery: if there's a spark when you complete the connection, better it should be away from the top of the battery, where ignitable gases may collect.

I've been jump-started by a Saturn Ion, with the same layout.
